About Me

My work begins with a curiosity to reduce manmade and organic objects, which are appealing to me or that capture my attention, down to their basic lines and shapes. By doing this abstract and often bizarre shapes emerge which, I then explore visually and structurally through sculpture using various different mediums. I generally tend to use man-made materials like plastics, metals and wire as I feel they give more options when constructing a piece. Most of my sculptures utilize bright colour, this is purposeful as I find it helps to accentuate and further abstract the forms I have found. Also due to the site-specific nature of my work, where the sculptures are placed is important and I find that bright colours in contrasting environments dramatically alter how the pieces are viewed. Recently I have been focusing on memory and how it affects our recollection of shape and colour. I find that the visual attributes of the objects and scenes I remember through memory are much more exaggerated and dynamic than the originals. To find subjects for this work I go on journeys to places I feel are important me as this seems to make the memory of the place or route much more vivid. The most prominent shapes and colours that I remember from that journey are what I use to manipulate compositionally and begin my sculptures. All of my works are temporary as the materials are constantly recycled to create new pieces. From doing this the materials change aesthetically with each piece of work that is made and thus creating ever-changing possibilities for new ideas and work.
